DAMASCUS (Sputnik) – Syria’s Ministry of Transport plans to cooperate with a foreign company in the construction of a new terminal for the Damascus International Airport, Syrian Transport Minister Ali Hammoud told Sputnik.
"As far as the government’s plan to construct an international airport in Damascus is concerned, we will approach one of international companies specializing in the construction of airports in line with the international specifications," Hammoud said without specifying what companies might be involved.
During the recent transport conference in Geneva, the Syrian representatives called on the forum participants to restore the country’s airlines flights to Europe which are currently suspended, Hammoud noted.
Damascus International Airport, opened in mid-1970s, is Syria’s busiest airport. Since the beginning of the civil war in the country in 2011, most international airlines have suspended flights to the airport.
