"On the request of the State Migration Service, which presented convincing facts that incorrect information was provided while processing citizenship application, the citizenship commission decided to uphold the request to suspend Saakashvili's Ukrainian citizenship and recommended the president to make the corresponding decision. Based on the recommendations the head of state signed the decree," the administration said.
Earlier in the day, Saakashvili vowed that he would fight for the right to return to Ukraine and rejected refugee status offered by Kiev. Nevertheless, he may face extradition to Georgia, if he returns to the country, a local lawmaker suggested. Previously, Kiev rejected the requests of Georgian authorities to extradite the former president two times.
Saakashvili had his Georgian passport revoked after he was named governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region in 2015. He is wanted in Georgia for several alleged felonies, including the embezzlement of $5 million in state funds.
