MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Israeli authorities decided to remove the remaining security barriers at the entrances to the Temple Mount in a bid to ease Arab-Israeli tensions triggered by the recent restrictions. These measure were not received well by worshipers, who became caught in clashes with police and worshipers, ultimately resulting in several deaths on the Palestinian side.
According to Tasnim News Agency, the protesters in Tehran called on the Foreign Ministry of Iran to issue an official protest against the crimes committed in Jerusalem.
The Temple Mount, which is the third holiest site in Islam, was equipped with metal detectors and surveillance video cameras to monitor its territory after a deadly shooting at the site on July 14 left two Israeli police officers dead. The added security led to violent clashes in Jerusalem and the West Bank over the weekend, and forced Palestine to suspend contacts with Israel over Palestinian deaths.
