UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Newly appointed Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya expressed hope on Friday that the established de-escalation zones in Syria would serve as a step toward mitigating the conflict in that country.
"I hope this is the prologue to mitigate the conflict in Syria," Nebenzya told reporters when asked about the creation of the de-escalation zones.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with opposition factions and Islamist terrorist groups such as Daesh and al-Nusra Front, now known as Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, both outlawed in Russia and the United States, fighting the Syrian Army.
