CHISINAU (Sputnik) — Some 1,000 people took to the streets of Moldova's capital of Chisinau on Sunday to protest mixed electoral system, according to the correspondent.

Representatives of non-parliamentary political groups, such as Dignity and Truth Platform Party (PPDA) and the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) gathered near the Stephen the Great Monument in Chisinau.

The organizers of the rally call for protests to continue until the law on mixed electoral system is repealed and adopted a corresponding declaration.

The protesters are expected to march through the central part of the city.

On July 20, the Moldovan parliament approved a bill introducing a mixed electoral system in the country. It was supported by Moldovan President Igor Dodon. The law came into force on July 21 after its official publication.

According to the law, the Moldovans will elect 50 lawmakers in line with the party lists, while 51 would be elected in single mandate constituencies.
