Hamburg Knife Attacker Charged With Murder, Radical Islamism Named as Motive
German prosecution filed charges against Hamburg knife attacker, who killed one person and injured six others, stating that the crime was based on the Islamist motive, the Office of the Public Prosecutor General said in a statement on Monday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the statement, the attacker, 26-year-old Ahmad A., has radicalized himself and carried out the attack with an aim of becoming a "martyr."
"The accused is charged with murder and attempted murder by inflicting dangerous bodily injuries in five cases," the statement said, adding that there was a "radical Islamist motive" for the assailant.
It is yet unclear whether the perpetrator is a member of any terrorist organization or ever got in contact with terrorists, as well as if any other people were involved in perpetrating or preparing the attack, the prosecution added.
On Friday, Ahmad A. attacked people with a knife at an Edeka supermarket in Hamburg, killing a 50-year-old man and injuring six others.
The man, born in the United Arab Emirates, was a failed asylum seeker and was targeted for deportation. However, the deportation case had been put off as he had no identity documents.
