MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Polish President Andrzej Duda has used his veto right regarding two controversial laws on the reform of the country's judicial system, which have sparked mass protests, the presidential office said in a statement on Monday.
"Under Article 122 of Section 5 of the [Polish] Constitution, President Andrzej Duda has sent laws on the National Judicial Council and the Supreme Court for reconsideration by the Sejm [lower house]," the office of the President in his official Twitter account says.
On July 15, the Polish Senate adopted two controversial bills on judicial reform, both of which were introduced by the PiS party.
The first outlines amendments to the law on the National Council of Judiciary, under which members of the Council will be appointed by the Parliament. The second draft bill is set to change the system of appointing the Supreme Court judges and to allow for the dismissal of all current judges not appointed by the justice minister himself.
