MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Almost 600 people were detained in Turkey in the past week over their alleged ties to the movement of Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, referred to as the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) by Ankara and suspected by Turkish authorities of orchestrating last year's failed coup, local media reported on Monday, citing the Turkish Interior Ministry.
A total of 593 people were detained by Turkish police as part of the investigations into the coup, the Turkish Minute newspaper reported.
On July 13, the country's Interior Ministry announced that a total of 50,510 people had been arrested and 169,013 had been subject of legal proceedings on coup charges since the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016, which left over 240 people killed and some 2,000 others wounded.
Gulen, who has been living in the United States since 1999, denied allegations of involvement and condemned the attempted coup.
