MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — At least 121 people were killed and over 1,950 people were injured during the four months of protests across Venezuela, the country's Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz said.

"An overall sad balance that we have during the last four months is that 121 Venezuelan was killed and 1,958 were hurt," Ortega said at a Monday press conference broadcast via Internet.

The Venezuelan official added that only 10 people were killed on Sunday during the day, when the election to the National Constituent Assembly took place.

Venezuela has been facing mass protests since spring. The manifestations were initially a response to the decision of the country's top court to severely limit legislative powers of the parliament. Despite the fact that the decision was eventually overturned, the protests continued. In May, the country's President Nicolas Maduro announced his decision to call the National Constituent Assembly, which was regarded by the opposition as an attempted coup and resulted in the further escalation of tensions and numerous casualties.
