Amid China Standoff, India Hits Pedal on Border Road Construction After Delay

In view of the ongoing border standoff with China in the Doklam area near the Sikkim border, India has decided to speed up plans to build roads along the border.

New Delhi (Sputnik) –  The Indian Army will complete the construction of border roads within three years in view of the emerging threats from China.

"A five-year (2015-2020) long term roll on works plan for Border Road Organisation (BRO) has been approved for construction / improvement of 530 roads as identified by the Army," Minister of State for Defense Subhash Bhamre told Parliament in a written reply.

"Work is in progress on 373 roads and for 157 road works is in pre-construction stage. Of the 373 roads, 17 roads are delayed, which were to be completed by 2016," he said, in reply to a question posed by MP Rajeev Gowda.

Minister of State for Defense Bhamre assured that the 17 road projects which have been delayed will be completed by 2020.

"The revised completion schedule for the 17 roads is that 8 border roads will be completed by 2017, while another 8 will be constructed by 2018 and the remaining one road will be completed by 2020," Bhamre said.
