"We are asking the UN Security Council to promptly send a mission as an early prevention and precaution measure," Cornelia Schmidt-Liermann, from the center-right Republican Proposal (PRO) party, said.
The motion was filed with the UNSC on July 25, five days before the controversial vote to Venezuela’s new constituent assembly. It was signed by 15 legislators from Argentina’s Cambiemos coalition of ruling parties. The senior politician said they expected to be joined by at least 50 more lawmakers from across the region.
The Venezuelan government said some 8.1 million turned out for the vote last Sunday, although the company that provided it with voting machines claimed that number was inflated by at least a million. The decision to hold the election triggered nearly-daily protests that killed over 110 people.
