"For mediators from Germany and France, the idea that there will be even more weapons in a region that is already full of arms and ammunition is a nightmare. Now, it is already impossible to reach a permanent ceasefire," Deutschlandfunk wrote.
The weapons, characterized as "defensive", may include Javelin man-portable anti-tank missiles, anti-aircraft weapons, and other advanced weaponry.
Former US President Barack Obama refused to supply arms to Ukraine, fearing the escalation of the conflict. Washington limited itself to deploying military advisors and some equipment such as radars and night vision devices.
In response, Poroshenko complained that all this won't help to win the war in Donbass, the German radio station recalled.
"So far, Poroshenko and Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak continue, tirelessly demanding more weapons from the West," Deutschlandfunk noted.
US special representative to Ukraine Kurt Volker reacted to the request of the Ukrainian authorities with understanding. He has offered Kiev hope that this time the Americans might make another decision, the media source wrote.
Earlier, Volker visited Ukraine and said that the United States should be more involved in resolving the situation in the Donbass.
Fighting between the Ukrainian army and pro-independence militia in the Donbass intensified last month; several dozen combatants were killed and dozens more were wounded in July.
Both sides have issued recriminations against each other for the escalation of the conflict, with Donbass officials accusing Kiev of indiscriminately targeting civilian areas with artillery shelling.
Meanwhile, Russian experts fear that US arms supplies could lead to a further escalation of the war in Ukraine. Speaking to Sputnik, Russian military expert Leonid Ivashov pointed out that "the supply of the US anti-tank guided missiles to Ukraine may be followed by the delivery of other types of lethal weapons there."
In his turn, Thierry Mariani, a member of France's center-right Republicans party, told Sputnik on Tuesday that the US plan to supply Ukraine with weapons is "extremely dangerous" and that Ukrainian President Poroshenko may use these arms to wage a new war in Donbass to improve his approval rating in the run-up to the presidential election in the country.
