Erdogan Surprised by Merkel's Demands to Release Journalist Arrested in Turkey
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT), France's largest trade union, on Friday called on President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to use all possible means to free French journalist Loup Bureau, who was reportedly detained in Turkey.

On Wednesday, Turkish media reported that Bureau was detained in southeastern Turkey's Sirnak province on his way to northern Iraq, before being charged with supporting terrorist organizations.

"The CFDT and its Union of Journalists urge the president of the French Republic and the minister of foreign affairs to make every effort to release young journalist Loup Bureau as soon as possible, charged in Turkey with 'participation in a terrorist group,'" the statement read.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on Wednesday called for Bureau's immediate release, stressing that "journalists must be free to do their job."

After the July 2016 failed coup in Turkey, Ankara launched mass purges across the country, arresting hundreds of journalists, diplomats, judges, academics, accused of being linked to exiled Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen. The cleric is suspected by the Turkish authorities of orchestrating the coup, while Gulen denied the allegations.
