For nine months, a 28-year-old man from Brazil has availed himself of Sweden's hotels without forking out a single krone. The serial sleeper was arrested earlier this year and has now been sentenced to eight months in prison for gross fraud.

During his unprecedented sleeping spree, the man changed 17 different hotels in and around Stockholm, availing himself of various services and leaving a total of 41 bills amounting to almost 250,000 SEK ($31,000), Swedish national broadcaster SVT reported.

The man's sleeping tour came to an abrupt end when he was finally caught at Scandic Södertälje in May. The hotel staff admittedly grabbed the fraudster red-handed, as he tried to take off via a locked door after completing his complimentary breakfast. The staff was reportedly alarmed by their colleagues at Scandic Skogshöjden, which previously had a similar encounter with the man, who left his bill unpaid.

Apparently, the stingy Brazilian used a similar scheme during his spree, which in the long run led to his downfall. All the hotel reservations were made on the same booking site. Upon arriving at the hotel, the 28-year-old would state that his luggage had been delayed and that he could not pay immediately. When he subsequently left the hotel, it appeared that the registered bank card had no coverage. On several occasions, the man reportedly also used a false passport.

In addition to the testimony of hotel stuff, GPS positions from the 28-year-old's mobile phone, wi-fi data and Facebook conversations were all used as a proof that the man really stayed at the hotels.

Finally, the Brazilian citizen was sentenced to eight months in prison. He will also pay damages equivalent to the sum he cheated the hotels out of. The man himself denied his crimes, suggesting that he had been in Sweden as a tourist and an IT consultant. He admitted to visiting some of the hotels, while vehemently denying his stay in others.
