"Today, the United States submitted a communication to the United Nations, in its capacity as depositary for the Paris Agreement, regarding the US intent to withdraw from the Paris Agreement as soon as it is eligible to do so, consistent with the terms of the Agreement," the release stated.
The release noted that as President Donald Trump stated on June 1, he is open to renegotiating the Paris agreement if it can contain terms more favorable to the United States.
The United States intends to keep participating in international climate negotiations, including the 23rd Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Despite Friday's notification, according to Article 28 of the agreement, the earliest actual withdrawal date for the United States is November 4, 2020.
