Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov set a record by spending over 24 hours in space 56 years ago, thus proving that it was safe for human beings to spend so much time there.

On August 6-7, 1961, he spent over 24 hours in space while flying 17 times around the Earth. Titov was just 25 years old thus being the youngest cosmonaut. Gherman Titov died from a heart attack on September 20, 2000.
