WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Kenyan leaders should reject violence and its people should work toward an election that is both peaceful and credible, former US President Barack Obama said in a statement on Monday.
"I urge all Kenyans to work for an election — and aftermath — that is peaceful and credible, reinforcing confidence in your new Constitution and the future of your country," Obama stated. "I urge Kenyan leaders to reject violence and incitement; respect the will of the people; urge security forces to act professionally and neutrally; and work together no matter the outcome."
Obama said that all election disputes need to be resolved through Kenya's "institutions and the rule of law."
If the election descends into violence, it is the Kenyan people who will be the ultimate losers in the process, Obama added.
Kenya's general elections are scheduled for August 8.
Obama visited Kenya two years ago while still serving as the US President.
