US defense giant Raytheon won $227.5 million to provide the US Army with next generation forward looking infrared radar (FLIR) and thermal viewers, according to the Pentagon.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US defense giant Raytheon won $227.5 million to provide the US Army with next generation forward looking infrared radar (FLIR) and thermal viewers, the US Department of Defense announced in a press release.

"Raytheon Co., McKinney, Texas, was awarded a $227,500,000 modification to a previous contract for horizontal technology integration; second generation forward looking infrared and independent thermal viewers; and assemblies for the servo electronics unit," the release said on Monday.

FLIR is used by the commander for targeting and the gunner on Army Abrams Main Battle Tanks. It is also used on Bradley Fighting vehicles.

Work is scheduled for completion on Sept. 25, 2018.
