Anti-Migrant Protests in South Africa's Capital Turn Violent - Reports
MOSCOW (Sputnik) The South African lawmakers decided to hold a vote of no-confidence in the president, who is also a leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), after a number of senior ANC party figures expressed their criticism of Zuma.

"Soweto and Turffontein residents burnt tires and blockaded streets from at around 4am [02:00 GMT] on Tuesday morning," Johannesburg Metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said, as quoted by the IOL media outlet.

Minnaar added that the number of police officers was increased in the areas, where the protests were taking place, no violence has been reported so far.

South Africa's opposition has repeatedly criticized the policy of Zuma, as well as his alleged involvement in corruption schemes. In November 2016, the Democratic Alliance party sent a request to initiate criminal proceedings against Zuma on suspicion of corruption. Later that month, the parliament failed to pass a vote of no-confidence regarding the president.

The protests have been taking place regularly across South Africa so as to urge the resignation of Zuma after the latter reshuffled the government, leading to the dismissal of several popular ministers.
