BEIRUT (Sputnik) The government forces established control over several strategic hills spread across the area in the course of the continued offensive against the Daesh, launched on Friday, the SANA news agency reported.

According to the outlet, the armed forces searched the area and deactivated mines and improvised explosive devices, before continuing to chase the terrorists.

At the beginning of July, Syrian government troops and their allies began the second stage of a large-scale operation, Grand Dawn. During the first phase launched in May, the Syrian armed forces managed to oust terrorists from several oil and gas fields in Homs province and to retake control of a stretch of the Syrian-Iraqi border.

The Syrian civil war has been raging for six years, with government forces fighting against both Syrian opposition groups who strive to overthrow President Bashar Assad, and numerous extremist and terrorist groups such as the Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al Sham (outlawed in Russia).
