MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The coast guards detected a boat, carrying 54 Syrians, including 27 children, off Tuzburnu in the Didim district of Aydin province, the Anadolu news agency reported, citing sources in the Coast Guard Command.
The security forces also located a truck with 106 migrants, including 23 children, during an operation in the Batikoy neighborhood.
The suspected organizer of the illegal crossings was reportedly arrested and taken into custody.
In March 2016, the European Union and Turkey agreed that Syrian refugees arriving in Greece would be returned to Turkey if their claim for asylum is rejected, while Syrian asylum seekers in Turkey would be resettled in Europe on a one-for-one basis. The agreement was supposed to address the overwhelming influx of migrants and refugees to Europe.
