MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An attack carried out on Wednesday by the Daesh terror group (banned in Russia) near Iraq's border with Syria left nine Iraqi Shia militia fighters dead and 23 injured, an Iraqi military officer said.
"Nine fighters were killed and 23 others injured in the attack," the officer told the Anadolu news agency on condition of anonymity.
Daesh terrorists attacked a post of the People's Mobilization Forces (PMF, also referred as Hashd al-Shaabi) north of Al Waleed border crossing with Syria, the officer stressed, adding that 11 Daesh militants were also killed in clashes with militia fighters.
The pro-government Hashd al-Shaabi was created in 2014 to fight against Daesh in Iraq. It is composed of predominantly Shiite militias and reportedly has up to 100,000 members.
