MOSCOW (Sputnik) Approval for US Congress among supporters of the Republican Party has fallen to a new low for 2017, with the rating now standing at 16 percent, a survey by the Gallup pollster revealed on Wednesday.

"Despite their party controlling both chambers of Congress, only one in six Republicans (16%) approve of the job Congress is doing, the lowest yet in 2017. GOP [Republican Party] approval has sharply declined this legislative session as congressional Republicans have struggled to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act," the pollster said in a press release.

GOP supporters' approval of Congress dropped 12 points from July, while overall approval by US adults decreased four points, also to 16 percent.

Democrats' approval of Congress stands at 12 percent in the August poll, unchanged from July.

"Democrats have given Congress fairly low ratings throughout 2017, ranging from 10% to 19%," the pollster noted.

The poll was conducted nationwide by phone on August 2-6 among 1,017 US citizens. The margin of error is 4 percentage points with a 95-percent confidence level.
