Officials working for Tokyo Electric Power Company, the company that owns the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and is now conducting radiation screenings on vehicles used near the site, revealed Wednesday that two of the 460 cars that were parked at the now-collapsed nuclear power plant have since gone missing.
According to reports, after the March 11, 2011, earthquake that damaged the power plant, Tepco employees continued to drive and travel in the contaminated cars for 11 more days, until March 22, when they finally took note of the increased radiation levels and ceased their use. Some of the cars were found to have nearly 10 times the government-set safety standards for radioactivity.
A plant operator with the company told Mainichi that some of the cars wound up being sold on the used-car market.
While the search is ongoing, Tepco is considering the manner in which the vehicles should be disposed. Until then, beware folks!
