WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States conducted two kinetic strikes against al-Shabaab militants in southern Somalia.
"On August 10, the Department of Defense conducted two kinetic strikes against al-Shabaab militants. The operation occurred near the Banadiir region in southern Somalia," the release said.
The statement did not indicate whether there were any casualties, but said US forces would assess the results of the operation and provide additional information as appropriate.
The operation was conducted jointly with the US regional partners countering al-Shabaab activities in Somalia, with no civilian casualties reported, the statement said.
Somalia has been experiencing violence since the eruption of the civil war between the clan-based armed factions in the country in the early 1990s. Al-Shabaab has been staging numerous attacks in the country in an attempt to establish the strict Sharia law in it.
In March, US President Donald Trump approved a Defense Department request to intensify strikes against al-Shabaab in Somalia.
