MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Peru said the ouster had followed Venezuela’s failure to respond to a declaration issued by American nations at this Tuesday’s meeting in Lima where they announced they did not recognize President Nicolas Maduro’s new constituent assembly.
"Having expressed its condemnation of a breakdown of the democratic order in Venezuela, the government of Peru has decided to expel Ambassador Diego Alfredo Molero Bellavia. He has been given a maximum term of five days to leave the Peruvian territory," a statement carried by the Peruvian Foreign Ministry read.
The 545-seat legislature was inaugurated in Caracas last week, prompting widespread condemnation. The United States and other American countries accused President Maduro of a power grab. He claims the assembly will help bring all sectors of the society together to rewrite the constitution.
