Serb political leaders in Montenegro said they will join the initiative of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to preserve Serbian cultural identity within former Yugoslavia, local media reported Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On August 4, Vucic and Milorad Dodik, the president of Republika Srpska, jointly proposed an initiative aimed at protecting Serbian national identity, language and culture.

Montenegro's New Serb Democracy party, also known as NOVA, representing the Serbian community in the country, would take part in drafting the proposed declaration, the Balkan Insight reported.

Serbs making up at least a third of the population of multi-ethnic Montenegro have repeatedly accused the Montenegrin authorities of discrimination.

The dissolution of Yugoslavia started in 1991 when Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia proclaimed independence. Montenegro left the union with Serbia in 2006, while Kosovo was the last of the former Yugoslav states to claim its independence in 2008 and is still only partially recognized by the international community.
