Radio Sputnik discussed the issue with David Schultz, political science professor at Hamline University.
Answering the question of whether Trump has been able to increase and upgrade the US nuclear arsenal, Schultz said:
"He [Trump] has actually done nothing since he has taken office in terms of upgrading. So, the last major upgrading took place under the orders of Barack Obama in 2014."
According to Schulz, in terms of its military budget the US spends more than the following 10 largest spenders combined.
"I think the strategy of the United States has been to maintain not just prone defense, but, let's say, military supremacy over the rest of the world in terms of wanting to be able to impose its order," the analyst noted. "That seems to be the official strategy," he added.
At the same time, he said he hopes the US will never have to use its nuclear weapons. The remarks follow recent verbal sparring between Washington and Pyongyang. On Tuesday, the president warned North Korea that any threat to the US would be "met with fire and fury."
Last month, Pyongyang is believed to have conducted two tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles. According to the Korean Central News Agency, the latest launch on July 28 was successful, and the missile reached the altitude of 3,725 kilometers and traveled 998 kilometers, for about 47 minutes, before falling into the Sea of Japan.
