WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On May 17, according to an ITC notice, a producer of crystalline silicon photovoltaic (CSPV) cells and modules, Suniva, filed a petition for import relief. The ITC is holding a public hearing next week as part of its investigation to determine if CSPV imports and like products are harming domestic industry.
"The petition requests that the President [Donald Trump] impose high tariffs on imported solar cells and high minimum prices for imported solar modules," the letter said.
"As part of the US International Trade Commission's investigation, we respectfully request that you also consider if the proposed trade remedies would negatively affect the American solar industry."
In the letter, the lawmakers also said the ITC must consider how fulfilling the request for import relief would negatively impact "tens of thousands of solar workers in our states and on the hundreds of companies that employ them."
The Commission earlier designated the probe as "extraordinarily complicated" based on the complexity of the issues including current antidumping duties and the global supply chains of the products involved. The Commission per law must make its injury determination on the case within 128 days after the petition was filed, or by September 22, 2017.
