US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had a late-night phone conversation on North Korea, Chinese state media reported Saturday.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — The two leaders exchanged opinions on the current situation in the Korean peninsula. President Xi stressed Washington and Beijing were both interested in maintaining peace and stability on a nukes-free peninsula, the China Central Television state broadcaster said.

The Chinese leader again urged his US counterpart and the North to refrain from words or actions that would escalate the crisis and reiterated that a peaceful resolution was the only option.

"All relevant parties must now exercise restraint… The Korean nuclear problem needs to be resolved through political reconciliation and dialogue," Xi was quoted as saying.

The United States and North Korea have recently heated up their rhetoric, with Trump threatening to unleash "fire and fury" on Pyongyang, which said it was planning a missile strike near the US territory of Guam.

In a fresh warning on Friday, Trump told the North the US military was "locked and loaded." Pyongyang responded by accusing the Republican of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war.
