MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Canadian pastor Hyeon Soo Lim, who was serving a life sentence in a North Korean prison since 2015 for what Pyongyang called anti-state activities, returned to Canada, media reported Sunday.
According to CTV broadcaster, Lim arrived in Canada on Saturday, and on Sunday morning he attended a service at the Light Korean Presbyterian Church in Mississauga.
"I am happy… I am proud to be Canadian," Lim said as he entered the church, as quoted by the broadcaster.
Lim was detained in February 2015 while on a humanitarian mission in Rajin, North Korea. In December of the same year, North Korean authorities accused Lim of attempting to overthrow the government in Pyongyang through his religious activities. The pastor was also found guilty of producing and circulating propaganda to tarnish North Korea’s image as part of an arrangement with the United States and South Korea.
