MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, Charlottesville saw a major rally of far-right nationalists dubbed "Unite the Right" protesting the removal of a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, which subsequently led to violent clashes between the demonstrators and counterprotesters.
"Having watched the horrifying video of the car deliberately crashing into a crowd of protesters, I urge the Department of Justice to immediately investigate and prosecute this grotesque act of domestic terrorism," Senator for Texas Ted Cruz said on his Facebook.
US Senator for Florida Marco Rubio called events in Charlottesville "a terror attack by white supremacists".
"Domestic terror in Charlottesville must be condemned by every single one of us. Otherwise hate is simply emboldened," Senator Tim Scott, representing South Carolina, said.
In response to the clashes, Governor of the US state of Virginia Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville. At least three people died as a result of the events, McAuliffe said.
