Hundreds Feared Dead in Sierra Leone Mudslide - Vice President
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhu instructed the Foreign Ministry to provide assistance to the government of Sierra Leone and local residents in the wake of deadly and devastating landslides which hit the African country as a result of heavy rains, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said Monday.

"Following the mudslide today… in Sierra Leone, and in accordance with instructions by… Netanyahu to extend assistance immediately and in every way possible, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by means of the Africa Division, MASHAV — Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation, and the Israeli embassy in Senegal, which is accredited to Sierra Leone, has begun to examine means of providing assistance to victims of the natural disaster in that country," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the ministry, the assistance will in particular include clean water, medicines, blankets and other items.

According to media reports, as a result of Monday's huge flood in Sierra Leone and a landslide in the town of Regent, located near the capital of Freetown, over 300 people were killed and about 2,000 lost their homes.

In July 2016, Netanyahu paid a historic visit to four African countries, namely Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Ethiopia in an attempt to boost cooperation with the region, open new markets or Israel and improve African nations’ voting record on Israel-related matters in international forums.
