McCain Gains Popularity After He Goes Against His Fellow Republicans
14:22 GMT 14.08.2017 (Updated: 15:04 GMT 14.08.2017) US Senator John McCain's favorability rating has risen to 58 percent after he cast the deciding vote that derailed Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare, a newly published Gallup poll revealed on Monday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — While the senator's support among Republicans declined from 61 percent to 51 percent, McCain's support among Democrats soared from 49 percent to 71 percent, the poll found.
"McCain's favorable rating is 58 percent after he cast the vote that sank GOP [Republican] attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. That is five points higher than McCain's previous reading from August 2015, with a surge in Democratic favorability more than making up for a decline among McCain's fellow Republicans," Gallup said in a summary of the poll's findings.
McCain returned to the Senate to take part in the healthcare vote after having an emergency surgery to treat an aggressive form of brain cancer.
With McCain's vote, along with those of two other Republicans and 46 Democrats, the Senate defeated the so-called "skinny repeal" bill by a vote of 51-49, scuttling Republican plans to roll back Obamacare.
Gallup surveyed 1,017 adults in 50 US states for the poll, which was carried out from August 2-6, shortly after the July 25 vote. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percent.
