MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has never conducted an independent ground military operation in Syria, local media reported on Wednesday citing IRGC spokesman Brig. Gen. Ramazan Sharif.
Earlier in the day, media reported that the IRGC had begun operations against the Daesh terrorist group (banned in Russia) in Syria, seeking revenge against Daesh terrorists for beheading Iranian soldier Mohsen Hojajji.
In response to media reports, Sharif was quoted by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) as saying that the IRGC was determined to continue providing its military advisory support to the Syrian army until the eradication of Daesh, stressing, however, that the IRGC had never conducted any independent ground warfare in Syria.
Iran is providing support to the Syrian government in its fight against various terrorist groups, including Daesh, and acts alongside Russia and Turkey as one of the guarantor states of the ceasefire in Syria.
