A minute of silence will be held on Friday at noon in Barcelona to pay tribute to the victims of the terror attack in the Spanish city, local media reported Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, a van hit pedestrians in Barcelona’s central Ramblas area. The police confirmed that the attack was of terrorist nature. Catalan Home Affairs Minister Joaquim Forn Chiariello confirmed that at least 13 people had been killed and over 50 injured in the van attack. Catalonia’s President Carles Puigdemont, in turn, said that 80 people were taken to hospital after the terror act.

The commemoration event will take place at the Placa de Catalunya at 12 p.m. on Friday (10:00 GMT), the Periodico newspaper reported.

Pope Francis, meanwhile, expressed deep concern over the incident and send his condolences to the Spanish nation, the Holy See’s official spokesperson said.

"The Pope is deeply concerned by what happened in Barcelona. He is praying for the victims of this incident and expresses his affinity to the whole Spanish nation, especially to the families of victims and injured," the spokesperson said.

Earlier on Thursday, Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont declared three days of mourning for the victims of the attack.
