Death Toll Rises: Spanish Official Says 13 Confirmed Killed in Barcelona Attack
18:25 GMT 17.08.2017 (Updated: 18:46 GMT 06.03.2023) The Catalan Interior Minister has confirmed that 13 have been killed in Thursday's van ramming terror attack in Barcelona, Spain.
In addition, at least 100 injuries have been reported. Catalan police have labeled the incident a terror attack.
The president of the Catalan region confirmed Thursday evening that two suspects had been taken into custody following the attack Thursday afternoon in which a van rammed into a crowd of people in Barcelona's city square.
It was reported after the incident that two men suspected of involvement in the incident had barricaded themselves in a bar and taken hostages. Catalan police have denied that any such hostage situation was ongoing.
Spanish police have released a photograph of Driss Oukabir, a Moroccan-born man who is alleged to have rented the van used in the attack.
This death toll makes it the deadliest terror attack in Spain since the 2004 Madrid train bombing that killed 192 and injured over 2,000 people.
