MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Representatives of UK environmental groups protesting against hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has called on the central government to stop drilling in the Lancashire country after the energy company Cuadrilla began doing so recently, local media reported Friday.
According to the UK Blackpool Gazette newspaper, the Friends of the Earth group has called on the country's Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark to not consent to the production of gas via controversial means.
The representatives of the Preston New Road Action Group also expressed their regret against the backdrop of Cuadrilla's announcement saying that the company had a "total disregard for the local community."
Hydraulic fracturing is a technology allowing for the extraction of shale hydrocarbons by injecting pressurized toxic liquid into the ground. This process has been largely criticized by its opponents for the risks posed to environment and people's health as they believe the process contaminates water in the area and could cause earthquakes.
