UK Police Send Officers to Airports to Obtain Information on Barcelona Attacks

UK Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley stated that police officers are at UK ports today ready to meet British holiday-makers returning to the UK from Spain in order to take any witness accounts about the attacks in Barcelona.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UK police have sent the officers to the country's airports in order to obtain any information about the attacks in Barcelona from people arriving from Spain, UK Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said in a statement on Friday.

"Officers are at UK ports today ready to meet British holiday-makers returning to the UK from the region in order to take any witness accounts. Anyone who has returned from Spain can also call the confidential hotline with information," Rowley said in a statement, issued on the Metropolitan Police website.

Rowley urged the people to send images or footage related to the incident to the UK police in order to assist the investigation. He also extended his condolences to the people affected by the attacks.

"Our thoughts are with Spain, the victims, their families and all the other people affected by yesterday's barbaric attack in Barcelona," Rowley was quoted as saying by the statement.

Spain was hit by a series of attacks on Thursday and the early hours of Friday, which claimed the lives of 14 people. On Thursday, a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians in the central Ramblas area in Barcelona, leaving 13 people dead and over 100 injured. The Islamic State terror group (IS, outlawed in Russia) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Hours after the incident, another vehicle attack took place in the coastal town of Cambrils, south of Barcelona. Six civilians and a police officer were injured, with some of them in critical condition. Later in the day, a woman injured in the Cambrils attack succumbed to her wounds.
