The United States does not intend to stay in Syria after defeating Daesh terror group (banned in Russia), US Department of State spokeswoman Heather Nauert said during a press briefing on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Syria must be governed by its own people and not by the United States or other forces, Nauert stated.

"That is not our plan, our intent is to defeat ISIS [Daesh, Islamic State] and we’re keeping," Nauert stated when asked if the United States plans to stay in Syria after defeating Daesh.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis have previously testified before Congress that the coalition’s successful operations in Iraq and Syria against Daesh are depriving the terror group of territory.

In May, Iran, Russia and Turkey, the three guarantor states of the Syrian ceasefire regime, signed a memorandum on the establishment of four de-escalation zones at the Syrian settlement talks in Astana.

As of today, the guarantor states have managed to reach agreements with opposition groups on creating three zones of which the third one was agreed upon in late July. The consultations on the fourth safe zone in the Idlib province are ongoing.
