Nine Parliaments Bash Pro-Maduro Assembly for Breaching Constitution
Parliaments in Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Chile have accused Venezuela’s new assembly of breaching the constitution after it granted itself the power to pass laws.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In a Lima declaration released Friday, the presidents of the nine parliaments said they "condemn the breach of democracy and the constitutional order" and accused the suberbody of "usurping" the functions of the opposition-controlled National Assembly.
National Assembly’s secretary Jose Ignacio Guedez has called an emergency meeting for Saturday morning to discuss what he claimed was a plan of the "fraudulent" rival assembly to replace the parliament by taking over its powers.
The constituent assembly was elected in July to rewrite the constitution in a bid to bring together people from different sectors of society. But opposition leaders accused President Nicolas Maduro of trying to bypass the parliament.
