Reports of Shooting at Train Station in Nimes, France

Civilians were ordered to evacuate the Nimes train station on Saturday evening following reports of suspicious activity. Police were sent in to ensure the absence of any security risks.

One suspect has been detained by French police, by security personnel are still searching for a second man, the Midi Libre newspaper reported, noting that man in custody may have used an imitation weapon.

The railway station in the southern French city of Nimes was evacuated on Saturday evening due to the presence of one or more armed men, local media reported.

France's Prefet du Gard disputed initial reports of gunshots being fired. Prefet du Gard "confirms the absence of shooting at the Nimes station," according to a Twitter announcement, which added that the police operation is underway to "check against a suspicious report." 

Unverified reports stated that up to three suspects may have entered the train station and open fired. While reports of shots fired have been dismissed, an eye witness notified the police of having seen one or more armed people in the vicinity of the transportation hub.

Locals have been asked to avoid the area by the police.

Local media reports indicate the town is on lockdown.
