MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the ABC broadcaster, a 29-year-old man from the Meadow Heights suburb in the north of Melbourne was arrested on Saturday night by officers from the special operations group in connection with a fire at the Imam Ali Islamic Center in December 2016. Early on Sunday, the man was charged and remanded in custody.
The security forces also arrested two other men who are currently waiting for a trial for allegedly plotting a terrorist act on Christmas day in 2016, separate to the arson attack.
Local police consider that the perpetrators of the attack were members of an extremist Sunni ideology, and the attack was influenced or inspired by the Daesh terror group.
The Imam Ali Islamic Center had been subject to a number of arson attacks over the recent years. Besides, in December 2016, a graffiti reading "Daesh" in English and Arabic appeared on a wall of the center.
