A car slammed into two bus stations in the French city of Marseille, the AFP news agency reports citing local police services. At least one person is dead and another injured.

Police have currently cordoned off the scene, local media reported. The 35-years old suspect was arrested.

The perpetrator mowed down a 42-year-old woman at the second bus stop, she later died from the injuries sustained. Another 29-year old woman is also allegedly injured.

The Bouches-du-Rhône police and the National Police services stated that the operation is underway and ask people to avoid the area of Vieux-Port, where the accident took place. They also stated that the motives of the perpetrator are as yet unknown.

The arrested driver was familiar to the police for minor crimes, but he wasn't on the intelligence supervision list, according to local TV reports. A source, close to the investigation, told the broadcaster that the driver suffered a mental disorder.

The Renault Espace car the driver used was carjacked earlier in the morning, the channel BFMTV reported.

The state of emergency France has been subject to since the November 2015 Paris attacks that killed 130 will be extended.
