Merkel Believes Vast Experience to Help Her Lead Germany Over Next 4 Years

German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that the considerable experience she has garnered over the years will enable her to successfully lead the country for another term.

BERLIN (Sputnik) – In an interview with the Bild newspaper on Monday, Merkel said that, from her point of view, those who are in power for longer periods of time acquire useful experience.

"I decided to run for the next four years and believe that my experience, energy, curiosity and joy will be able to successfully shape these four years," Merkel said.

The chancellor pointed out that she was ready to address new challenges posed by digital policy, as well as new threats to Europe and the world.

Merkel has been serving as head of the German government since 2005. Only Helmut Kohl was in office for a longer period of time (1982-1998).

The Germany's upcoming federal election is scheduled for September 24. According to recent polls, Merkel’s conservative bloc, made up of the Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), is predicted to win the election with anywhere from 37 to 40 percent of the vote.
