MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Ghana is interested in purchasing helicopters as well as military equipment such as vehicles and small arms from Russia, Ghanaian Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul told Sputnik on Tuesday.
"We already use Russian helicopters MI-17. Today, we more interested to ensure that we continue with that partnership. We are interested to purchase additional helicopters, purchase some military equipment such as vehicles, small arms, uniforms but our focus more is on helicopters, because that is what we use in our country and they serve us very well," Nitiwul said on the sidelines of the Army-2017 expo.
Nitiwul said that Russia’s military technology was top-notch while the weapons were "priced very good to be competitive on the market."
"We are going to have a series of meetings with Rosoboronexport [Russian state arms exporter]. I want to meet them tomorrow and I will know exactly what and how many pieces we are going to purchase," the minister added.
In late 2014, local media reported that Ghana was going to purchase additional Mi-17 helicopters, while the country’s authorities were also considering the purchase of Mi-35 helicopters.
