MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier this month, South Korea's main opposition Liberty Korea Party called for negotiating with the United States on the redeployment of its nuclear warheads to deter North Korea's increased nuclear threat.
"The government is not considering tactical nukes deployment at all … With the US deterrence policy in place, South Korea has enough of a nuclear deterrence against any nuclear provocation by North Korea," Chung said as quoted by Yonhap news agency.
Chung added that there was a necessity to enhance South Korea’s defense by boosting military spending.
"It is a challenging issue but I believe we could find a solution to a constructive direction … The short-term goal is to prevent a war from breaking out again on the peninsula. The government reiterated the principle of a peaceful resolution to the US several times," Chung stressed.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula has become aggravated in recent months due to a series of missile launches and nuclear tests conducted by Pyongyang, all of which are claimed to be in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. Earlier in August, the UNSC unanimously adopted Resolution 2371, which further tightens sanctions imposed on North Korea.
