CAIRO (Sputnik) – The negotiations were held in the Saudi capital of Riyadh early on Tuesday. The HNC said that the meeting was not successful over the Moscow group's refusal to adopt any document demanding the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad and his exclusion from governing the country during the transitional period.
"The negotiations were held in a positive atmosphere and laid a foundation for a new period of mutual understanding among the opposition platforms, based on openness and on explaining positions at the negotiating table," Khalidi said.
"The Moscow platform has not set such a condition but they believe that any discussion of Assad’s destiny now would be an obstacle for the mutual understanding between the opposition platforms. The discussion on Assad’s resignation has not been completed yet … there are no differences on his resignation, but on how and when that will happen," Khalidi said.
The negotiations in Riyadh were held in order to converge the positions of the three different groups of the Syrian opposition ahead of the next round of Geneva talks on Syrian settlement scheduled for September.
