Reportedly a sales agent for a sheep trading company, the suspect hid the pills — weighing nearly 1,000 kilograms — inside a barrel filled with sheep organs, Gulf News reported. The smuggling attempt was made in April.
According to the Khaleej Times, the 26-year-old Syrian man was unable to pull the wool over the authorities' eyes after a routine customs inspection at the Jebel Ali Port revealed the hidden drugs.
"The defendant said the shipment [contained] animal guts. He was to transport that haul to a warehouse in Dubai to deliver it to another person," court documents published by the Times read. "His share was [nearly $1,500] after the clearance of the goods was done."
Law enforcement on the scene reported the man acted surprised after he was shown the narcotics.
Though gruesome, the drugs weren't an uncommon find: reports suggest similar incidents occur frequently in the United Arab Emirates as smugglers try to transport drugs into Saudi Arabia.
