Merkel’s Conservatives Keep 14% Lead Over SPD Month Before Election - Poll

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc of the Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) holds a 14-percent lead over its main opponent, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), a month before general election, a fresh poll revealed on Wednesday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) According to Forsa poll, the CDU/CSU is likely to gain 38 percent of votes in the upcoming elections, while the SPD is projected to get 24 percent of votes.

Public support for CDU/CSU has decreased by 1 percent within a week, while the chances of the SPD improved by 1 percent.

The survey also showed that the positions both of eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Left party are standing at 9 percent of the potential vote.

The Free Democratic Party is projected to gain 8 percent of votes, while the Greens might receive 7 percent of votes, according to the poll.

The poll was conducted on August 14-18 among 2,501 adult German citizens.

Germany’s parliamentary election is scheduled for September 24.
